Automatic Pool Cleaners

Automatic Pool Cleaners Overview

The automatic pool cleaners have been produced into three different categories, which have been accepted and used widely by pool owners and the pool service industries. These three categories are: suction side cleaners; pressure side cleaners; and robots.   All three automatic pool cleaners are major improvements over the traditional pool filtering cleaners which involved quite a bit of human involvement.

The suction side automatic pool cleaners are basically those which attach to the suction side of you pool plumbing. What is meant by “suction side” is the pipes and fittings bringing water out of the pool by the filter pump to be filtered. The new suction side automatic pool cleaners are attached at the pool to one of the suction ports. A suction is created on the underside of the automatic cleaner, with the hose attached and filter pump running. The unit will either move in a casual manner or in a mechanical manner, sucking up debris through the neck and then the filtering process. Use an in-line leaf trap if you have a lot of trees in the pool area when using the suction side automatic pool cleaners, plus it can be used in all types of pools.

The pressure side automatic pool cleaners are those attached to the return or “pressure side” of the circulatory system and are used in in-ground pools. This type of pool cleaner are helpful in distributing cleaner, filtered watered throughout the pool as it collects debris in their own debris bag, which is a definite advantage.  If the bag becomes too full, it will not collect anymore. Some of these pumps require a booster pump as the pressure pool cleaner requires about 30 psi to effectively operate.  The 360 model does not work well with floor returns, pools with small and slow circulatory systems, or slit returns of crushed copper pipe. The really big advantage of these types of automatic pool cleaners with booster pumps is they run with a time-clock and can turn itself on and off automatically.

Robots, such as the new Dolphin model, are excellent automatic pool cleaners even though they are more expensive. Self-contained electric cleaners, it operates two motors: a pump motor which sucks debris into the unit’s filter and a drive motor which moves the robot around the pool. Advantages to this type of cleaner is its easily cleaned, self-contained filter. Their coverage is done well being computer controlled with remote controls. There is no resistance or back pressure filtering as the robot automatic pool cleaners are the only cleaners not attached to the pool’s circulatory system.
