The first step in using pool paint is to figure out what type of paint is on your pool currently. Typical pool paint is some type of chlorinated rubber paint or it is epoxy paint. Rubber pool paint last around three years while epoxy paint lasts almost 7 years.
If you are completely unsure of the type of pool paint used then you can always knock off a chip of the paint and bring it to your paint dealer. They will not only help you figure out what type of paint it is they can also suggest the type of paint you should use. It is a good idea to use the same paint on a pool that was originally used. The combination of different types of paint usually leads to earlier wear and tear. There is also a possibility that it will not cover at all The more layers of paint you have on your walls the more coats of paint you are going to need to do. You may want to consider hiring in sandblaster to knock off all the paint. That way you can start fresh. Which ever decision you make will be based on your pool specific condition. Remember before you use pool paint read the directions and take the necessary precautions. Make sure you wash down all surfaces that are going to be painted with TSP or trisodium phosphate. Then completely rinse with fresh water. This will take the shine off the old paint as well as any dirt and dust. When you begin using pool paint make sure you wear goggles, have on gloves, and a mask. Before you start using pool paint make sure you fill all cracks in the pool. Let the spackle dry completely then lightly sand to make the surface smooth. Wash down these areas again and rinse. Make sure the pool is completely dry before you attempt any type of pool painting. Once the pool is painted it may take days for the paint to cure. Be sure to read the manufacturers directions to know for sure. You may want to consider purchasing a tarp or using a pool cover to make sure the weather will not damage your new pool paint job. Wind can blow in leaves, and it can rain – both of which can hold up the pool usage. If you are already resourceful enough to paint your pool, why not think about adding a little something extra. There are companies which sell pool specific stencils. Fish, mermaids, boats, you name what you want and you can have it in a stencil. Updating a pool can be done with very little money and pool paint. |
