Swimming Pool Fence

Swimming Pool Fence: Take a Look at Mesh Fencing

Very few jurisdictions in the United States require a homeowner to erect a swimming pool fence even though drowning is the number two cause of death for U.S. children under five. Parents who want to keep their children safe from harm in the pool area often choose to erect a swimming pool fence, but sometimes, traditional fencing doesn’t work. Usually, children are able to get past the fencing because it was not properly secured or they are able to squeeze through the fence bars. A mesh swimming pool fence offers extra security in the pool area, providing parents with peace of mind when children are at play.

Though removable, a mesh swimming pool fence is specifically designed to provide a barrier around swimming pools against toddlers and young children. The tension-based fencing system generally comes in 15 foot long sections in heights of 42, 48 or 60 inches and weighs about 14 pounds. The flexible sections and mounting systems allow the swimming pool fence to be easily erected around any size or shaped swimming pool.  Non-conducting polypropylene sleeves are drilled into the pool deck or other surrounding surface and the aluminum poles are inserted into the sleeves. The sleeves can be drilled in almost any type of pool deck.

The swimming pool fence itself is made from a polyester mesh fabric that is usually coated with polyvinyl to resist mildew and provide UV protection. The continuous basket weave has a tensile strength of 270 pounds per inch, meaning it is impossible to rip the swimming pool fence under normal use. The fence border is reinforced vinyl with a tensile strength of over 380 pounds per square inch, keeping the fence from sagging and maintaining the mesh’s tensile strength. The mesh comes in a variety of colors, though most people simply install black mesh. Aluminum poles are powder-coated to match the mesh netting.

No swimming pool fence is any good without a self-closing, self latching gate. Mesh fences come with these kinds of safety gates. The gates usually operate with a very strong magnetic latch and are made out of aluminum mesh rather than polyester.

Swimming pools are great fun for the whole family, especially the little ones. However, swimming pools are also very dangerous for the youngest members of your family and, if you have small children, you should never build one without a swimming pool fence around it. If you are concerned about the safety of your children but also like the flexibility of being able to take down the fence when children aren’t around, a mesh swimming pool fence may be the perfect choice for your pool safety needs.
