Pool Slide Care and Maintenance

Your kids have been begging for a pool slide, and deep down, you want one too. Slipping and swooshing down a pool slide into cool, clear water, whooping and hollering and carrying on, brings out the water-loving kid in all of us. If you want the wet and wild fun to last summer after summer, you have to install your pool slide property and you have to take good care of it. Read on to learn how.

It is simple enough to install a pool slide after your pool has been built, but it may just be easier to install the slide at the time of pool construction. If you are going to have a custom built pool slide, it is best to do that when the pool itself is constructed. Either way, slides are generally installed in one of two ways. Either holes are drilled in the deck and the slide’s support poles are dropped in or fasteners are sunk into the concrete and the slide is attached to the fasteners. Regardless of how the pool slide is installed, make sure that it is stable. A wobbly pool slide is unsafe and unacceptable.

A pool slide generally has both plastic and acrylic components. Both materials can be cleaned the same way: with non-abrasive soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals and disinfectants, and always review the label before applying any cleaner to acrylic. If you want to disinfect the pool slide, it is safe to use bleach and most bathroom disinfectants. After seasons of use, the slide will pick up scratches. Scratches can be removed using any plastic polish and a clean, cotton cloth.

During the season, the hot, summer sun in combination with constant exposure to chlorine, can wreak all manner of havoc on a pool slide including warping, fading and cracking.  Protect the pool slide from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays when not in use by covering it. After use, before covering, rinse the slide with non-chlorinated water and dry it off. During the off-season, store the pool slide away from the elements in a pool house or garage if it can be disassembled and removed. If not, cover the slide securely when you close the pool for the season. Before storing for a season of non-use, apply a plastic moisturizer or acrylic sealant to the slide’s plastic or acrylic surfaces. If there are any metal parts to the slide, clean them, dry them and treat them for rust.

Everyone enjoys a pool slide. If you properly care for and maintain your pool, you and everyone else will be able to enjoy slip sliding into the pool all the long days of summer.
